The sad sorry decline of a maverick

For those of us who once admired his genuine maverick ways, the decline of John McCain has been a heartbreaking spectacle, beginning with his being forced into choosing Sarah Palin as his 2008 running mate.  It has been a steady downhill slide ever since.

But my sorrow has turned into disgust.  Comments directly linking the man who beat him to the horrors in Nice put Senator McCain on the fast track to political oblivion.

While he states that the tragedy in Frances is “an act of mayhem and despicable,”  Sen. McCain goes onto to point blame on "the president of the United States—who allowed this to happen, his policies are directly responsible for ISIS and ISIS is responsible for these attacks.”

Perhaps it's his age, but Sen. McCain clearly misremembers the state of affairs in Iraq at the end of the Bush administration.  In his memory, "“We had the war won, thanks to the service of so many brave Americans that sacrificed their blood and treasure, and the president decided to pull everybody out of Iraq.  Al-Qaeda went to Syria, became ISIS, and we watched ISIS grow and take over the second largest city in Iraq, and the story we all know."

Dear Senator McCain:
  • The president followed the time table set by President George W. Bush in pulling our troops out of Iraq.
  • ISIS formed during the Bush 43 administration. For a quick primer, I suggest you listen to this 2014 PBS report
  • Although we could have left Iraq in a more orderly way, the president was going to be nailed by the GOP for messing up the close of our involvement no matter what he did.
  • We can't keep sending our young men & women over to try to staunch a flow of conflicts that reach back over literally thousands of years.

Senator, you have a lovely wife, a spunky daughter, a beautiful home that beckons.  Your relevancy ended in the summer of 2008, when you sold out your principles to win the GOP's presidential nod.  It did not end well.  This election will not end well.  At least leave with some dignity.  If you still know what that means.
